The Negative Form

• Putting a verb in the negative in Italian is generally very easy. You just place the word NON before the verb. Examples:
  
  ◊ io NON ho ≡ I don't have
  ◊ io NON sono ≡ I am not
  ◊ io NON faccio ≡ I don't do
  ◊ io NON oso ≡ I dare not
   

• Here some more examples with different verbs, tenses and moods:
  
  ◊ io NON sapevo ≡ I didn't know
  ◊ io NON vedrò ≡ I won't see
  ◊ io NON farei ≡ I wouldn't do
  ◊ io NON ho potuto ≡ I was unable to
  ◊ io NON ho ≡ I don't have
  ◊ NON pensi che sia vero? ≡ don't you think it may be true?
  ◊ NON avevo mai visto un film così ≡ I had never seen such a film
  ◊ NON va affatto bene ≡ it's not all right at all
  ◊ NON funziona ≡ it doesn't work
  ◊ NON andar via ≡ don't go away!
  ◊ io NON farei così tante storie ≡ I wouldn't fuss so much
  ◊ NON è vero ma pazienza ≡ it's not true but let's forget about it
  ◊ NON hai fame? ≡ aren't you hungry?
  ◊ come mai NON è sposato? ≡ how come he is not married?
  ◊ NON faresti meglio a dire la verità? ≡ wouldn't it be better if you told the truth?
  ◊ NON averlo detto subito è stato un errore! ≡ Not saying it right away was a mistake
   

• However, you can (or even must) sometimes insert personal, impersonal and reflexive pronouns - also combined - between the negation NON and the VERB. Examples:
  
  ◊ NON me l'avevi detto ≡ you hadn't told me about it.
  ◊ NON te lo voglio dire ≡ I don't want to tell you about it
  ◊ NON me lo lasciare qui ≡ don't leave it here (for me to look after it)
  ◊ NON glieli dare ≡ don't give them to him
  ◊ NON si capisce niente ≡ one can't understand anything (= you can't understand anything)
  ◊ NON glielo si  può dare ≡ one can't give it to him (= you can't really give it to him)
  ◊ NON ci si  può fidare di lui ≡ you can't really trust him
  ◊ NON me lo  sono dimenticato ≡ I didn't forget it
  ◊ NON me ne importa niente ≡ I couldn't care less
  ◊ NON te ne preoccupare ≡ don't worry about it
   

• Sometimes you can add CHE (that) in the chain of words between NON and the verb to achieve up to 4 consecutive in-between words! Examples:
  
  ◊ NON che mi piacesse! ≡ not that I really liked it!
  ◊ NON che non me lo fossi guadagnato! ≡ not that I hadn't earned it!
  ◊ NON che lo si potesse prevedere! ≡ not that one could have foreseen it!
