Maria's Blog is just a normal blog where our Maria Paola (or Maria for short) tells us about her daily life, thoughts and feelings. In doing so, she uses normal Italian with no attempt at simplifying it. Luckily, the translation provided lets you understand everything. And if that is not enough, you know that you can always ask us!

At long last I went to Trieste for the day yesterday.

Eh yes, I_say finally because this excursion, organised by a friend with the my family, is been postponed even too_many times because of_the bad weather.
Yes, I say "at long last" because this trip, which was organised by a friend and my family, had been postponed many times because of bad weather.

The city of Triest and the castle of Miramare them I_had visited when_I_was a_small_girl, destination of a school excursion.
I had visited the city of Trieste and the Miramare castle when I was a girl, on a school trip.

To be honest, after the lunch - really very_good, all based on fish, in one of_the restaurants more old of_the city which is_called Hostaria alle Bandierette in Riva Nazario Sauro - we_have visited only the Piazza Unit d'Italia and the streets surrounding, which included the old ghetto Jewish and the cavana (building typical of the lagoon Venetian, it_is the shed of_the boats), now a beautiful small_square very typical.
To be honest, after having lunch in one of the oldest places in the city called Hostaria alle bandierette in Riva Nazario Sauro - which was really excellent, entirely consisting of fish - we managed to visit only the Piazza Unit d'Italia and the nearby roads including the old Jewish ghetto and the so-called "cavana" (a typical Venetian lagoon structure serving as a quay), which has been transformed into a picturesque "piazzetta."

The thing pleasant is that all the_area visited is area pedestrian. I_have noticed one thing: each few meters there_was a bar, a coffee-shop, a restaurant, a tavern, it_seems that to_the inhabitants_of_Trieste is_much_appreciated finding_themselves together to exchange two words, accompanied by a good glass, a coffee, a small_pastry or an appetizer.
One really pleasant thing about it is that all this area is a pedestrian zone. I noticed something: every few yards there is a bar, a coffee shop, a restaurant, a tavern. It looks as if the inhabitants of Trieste like to meet up and have a chat with a nice glass of wine, some coffee, a pastry or an appetiser.

Then also we have sipped a good coffee sat at_the small_table of a other historical place of_Trieste: the Coffe-Shop of_the Mirrors, in_the very_large square which hosts among the most beautiful palaces that I have ever seen, building of age comprised between the 1780 and the 1905.

Some of these palaces are the seat of the Government, the Town Hall, the Regione and a very luxurious hotel. The pavement is made of blocks of sandstone where blue LEDs have been inserted. I didn't see them lit but my friend told me that they turn the piazza into something really splendid in the evening.
